You scared?

Microsoft announced that they will be putting a black box into the next version on Windows. They said that it will act like the black box on aircrafts.

"The tool will build on the existing Watson error-reporting tool in Windows but will provide Microsoft with much deeper information, including what programs were running at the time of the error and even the contents of documents that were being created. Businesses will also choose whether they want their own technology managers to receive such data when an employee's machine crashes."

The customer has the option to send the data or not. They also said that the customer will also have the option to edit the data to remove e-mail content and other personal information before sending it. The data that is sent will be anonymous. The details aren't finalized yet, so this could all change.

"Our stance on this is that the user is in control," Sullivan said. "In the consumer environment, you will be presented with a dialog that clearly gives you the choice whether to share the information and then also provides exactly what the detail is so you can parse character by character what's being sent."

IT managers can set the options to keep track over everything, including if they were running a messenger program and that they said that they were going to get a new job. The black box will read and keep in memory everything that is going on before and during the crash.

They are doing this so when a error occurs, the customer can send the report and Microsoft can fix the problem and release a patch before more people get the same problem.

Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Do you think this will really help fix the problems with Windows? Is this breakig our privacy?

Both? It will likely help them fix some of the larger crashes, but some crashes are likely caused by odd combinations of things they will never fix (or arn't even their place to fix). But it is most definetly heading even more into 'big brother' land with privacy being owned by the company. Good thing you can always unplug your computer from the network/phone line. Oh, wait, everything is going wireless too, looks like that won't work for too much longer...

LoL..All you have to do is turn your Wireless adapter/card/chip, etc... "Off"... If your real concerned you can turn the PC off and unplug it..LoL!!

Personally, I think it is a good idea.. it is good in the respect that it will allow MS to respond to similar "widespread" errors by creating "Patches" for the OS..

Plus the ability to send or not, and edit what you send makes it seem pretty harmless as far as "Privacy" concerns..

Wheres the harm in that if it means you will gain a better running OS??

1. Good Idea

2. Yes I believe it will really help fix problems with Windows.

3. I see absolutely no Privacy concerns at all.

Zero.

I wonder if (like the airplane BB's) it will record the audio of the user's response when the PC crashes... ?

1. Good idea if it doesn't waste a lot of CPU cycles.

2. Error reporting definitely helps with the troubleshooting process.

3. No privacy violations as long as the machine administrator has complete control of whether or not the information is released while on the internet.

I eagerly await the arrival of the new OS from Microsoft.

In the article it talks about working hand and hand with other companies that create the other software to make things more compatible. It was talked about towards the end of the article. *You have to read the article for the complete story, I just summed it up*

My motto regarding a malfunctioning machine:

"What's the time? Hammer time."

*Cue funky beats*

"Do you know the indestructable black box they put in planes, why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?"

why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?"

Just my guess, but even though the plane would survive the crash it would be near impossible to clean the gooey mess out of the interior.

BTW...the 'black box' was an Aussie invention....which is probably why it's also not black at all...

Isn't it a hunter orange color? Or something bright like that?

I didn't know it was a Aussie invention

It was a reference to Windows...
